The McDonald Community YMCA was the recipient of a $1,000 donation from the Heroines of Jericho, an offshoot of the Prince Hall Freemasons. The local chapter was founded in part by William “Gooseneck” McDonald, a prominent African-American businessman in Fort Worth during the 20th century. McDonald also donated a building for the YMCA, which was subsequently named in his honor.
The McDonald Community YMCA offers traditional programs as well as leadership programs for economically disadvantaged teens including a gang prevention program, TRUCE. In addition, the McDonald Community YMCA holds a community run each year in honor of William McDonald, called the Bill McDonald Gooseneck 5K. In its fourth year, the run will be held this year on Saturday, September 26 beginning with registration at 6:00 a.m.
