Three years ago, Kathleen went through a difficult time when her marriage fell apart. “It was a very trying time for me and the kids,” she says, “we were floundering.” With summer fast approaching, she was wondering what they could do when a friend suggested the YMCA.
Both of Kathleen’s kids were soon flourishing in summer day camp at the Y and Kathleen received financial scholarships to help her pay for it. “It made a difference for my kids that first summer,” she says. And they have attended every summer since then. “It’s quality care. They learn the Y values, and are provided a lunch and snacks and even get to go on field trips.”
“When you go through a divorce and a family is split, you have so many disruptions, you are looking for any way to get some normalcy back to your children,” she adds. “The YMCA program allowed that for my children.”
“Without Step Up for Kids funding, I would not be able to have quality care,” she says. “The counselors and directors have invested in my kids. They are not just watching them, but investing in what they are becoming.”
