For Patricia Lopez, having a scholarship to the YMCA has brightened her family’s entire world. “The kids love to come to the swimming pool and I come to exercise,” says Patricia who has lost 45 pounds since beginning with group exercise classes. But what Patricia appreciates most is the support she receives from Y staff.
“Sometimes I’m very stressed and I put myself in a little black hole,” says the mother of three, who admits to suffering from depression. “It helps a lot when someone motivates you when you feel down and says ‘You’re gonna be fine – you’re gonna be OK.’” Patricia, who is self-employed as a house cleaner, has found her work to be slower during the economic downturn. “When I feel down or depressed and everyone says ‘Hi’ to me, it helps a lot.”
Patricia appreciates the help she has received that allows her family to utilize the YMCA. “Thanks to other people, I received a scholarship and my kids are having fun and I can get my stress out,” she says. And as her three kids enjoy splashing in the pool on a hot summer day, she smiles and laughs. “I don’t have the words to say thank you enough.”
